Are you thinking about expanding your directing career beyond film and TV work? Are you interested in how new technology is changing the way that stories are told? Would you like to be linked up with people working and commissioning in other sectors, who are interested in you and your storytelling skills?
And would you like to be connected with other directors who are thinking along the same lines, to share your experiences and gain inspiration and advice from others? If so, then Directing Outside The Box (DOTB) is for you.
DOTB is a new programme of events and support created by the DCF. We have joined up with partners in games, brand marketing, new technology, AI and VR to run a series of sessions over the coming months to connect directors with new contacts, new thinking and new ways of using your directing skills, alongside your film and TV work. We plan to run in-person as well as online events to help open up cross-sector networking opportunities for screen directors.

Opportunities in Branded Storytelling
One of the key trends in marketing right now is brand storytelling - companies who are commissioning and owning content formats to build loyal audiences around their brands. This is a significant shift from traditional ad campaign based marketing, and means brands are operating as studios or commissioners in ways that are familiar to the Film and TV sector. We’ve brought together two leading thinkers from the B2B and B2C marketing sector to talk through the work they’re doing, why they are interested in brand storytelling, and how they work with production talent.
Matt Locke is the Founder and one of three directors at Storythings, where he leads on operations, as well as executive producing projects for clients including ADP, PBS, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and Wellcome Trust. Before founding Storythings in 2011 he worked for over a decade in senior digital roles at Channel 4 and the BBC, including roles as Head of Innovation at BBC and Head of Multiplatform at Channel 4.
Alex Ayling is the Head of Content & Editorial for the Digital Consumer Engagement division at The LEGO Group, that basically means he’s responsible for the teams delivering the editorial and content strategies for kids and grown-up audiences across their apps and websites. Before The LEGO Group, Alex worked in digital commissioning and production roles for many leading global media organisations, including Warner Bros (as Head of Content, Wizarding World Digital) , BBC Studios, and TwoFour Group.
This event is now SOLD OUT and no longer open for registrations of interest.
